Happy Birthday To Me

Who would have believed that it was 54 years ago today that I, the famous cartoon dog Yowp, made his TV debut? How fleeting are the days! And, ah, what memories!

Well, there aren’t too many memories. As my loyal fans throughout Yowpdom know, I only appeared in three cartoons. The first was Foxy Hound-Dog, drawn by Lew Marshall and Mike Lah, the second was Duck in Luck, animated by Carlo Vinci (the less said about the duck which appeared therein and went on to stardom, the better) and the third was Bear Face Bear, drawn by Gerard Baldwin. Hey, Elmer-Bugs-Daffy had a trilogy, so why can’t I?

To mark the festive occasion, feel free to do one of two things. Celebrate by going up to your friends and barking “yowp, yowp!” Or, if you think that’ll destroy valuable friendships for life, watch the debut cartoon below (if it hasn’t been yanked from the internet by the time you read this).

  1. I've always had a soft spot for this cartoon although I've always wondered how did that dog memorize all his lines?

  2. The lines were easy. It was finding the motivation. I had to get pointers from Mr. Jinks.

  4. Happy Birthday, Yowp. Your acting range was incredible in " Bear Face Bear ". In a 40 second scene you go from a forceful Yowp, to an inquisitive yowp..to finally.. a pitiful, soft, I think I'm in big trouble yowp. None of Strasberg's students could have done better. Many Happy returns of the day.

  5. The final scene just tears your heart out. Too bad the television academy wasn't giving out a "Best Supporting Actor Performance in an Animated Series" Emmy back in 1959, or the show could have had two awards it's first season.

  7. Somehow, I'd never seen the debut performance. Pretty damn good given the budget restrictions. Final crying shot went on a little long—I kept thinking we were going to cut to a final observation/remark from Yogi, but it didn't.
    Happy birthday, Yowp.

  8. I own a piece of history, I guess, because I own the first cartoon featuring that beloved pooch Yowp. Happy Birthday and I hope you enjoy fetching the bloomin' fox some more.
