A Long Little Doggie

Like the Huck and Yogi half-hours, the Quick Draw McGraw Show had those little cartoons between the cartoons. Here are some frames, in what looks like an Eastmancolor print that’s really gone red.

Quick Draw’s waiting for Augie and Doggie Daddy to go with him to a masquerade party. Augie reveals he’s going as “the longest dachshund in the world.” Where’s Doggie Daddy? “It’s da livin’ end,” he says from the end of the tube as the cartoon fades.

The animation is by Lew Marshall with Monte supplying some simple backgrounds.

  2. Thank goodness for digitization, so that great classic films like this one will no longer deteriorate.

  3. It occurred to me that the real and sad reason that they didn't issue season one of THE QUICK DRAW McGRAW SHOW a decade back when THE HUCKLEBERRY HOUND SHOW season one and THE YOGI BEAR SHOW were issued had nothing to do with music rights and everything to do with (completely harmless) presence of Baby Looey in all of them. Like the (far more offensive) SPEEDY GONZALES cartoons, WB wasn't about to test any real or imagined offense of the hispanic community with something which isn't likely to be a tremendous seller despite its quality. I'm just hopeful that Earl Kresse and company were able to find a lot of the interstitials like this one for that day far in the future when we're enlightened enough to realize that poor Baba was the brains of the operation, despite his Mexican accent.

  4. Speedy G. WAS FAR more offensive, but because of the unexplanable presence of Daffy Duck as his foe, instead of the bad puddytat (as Tweety Pie would call him often), even if Sylvester was not as popular in theatres as Daffy. At least team Daffy and Speedy as a team a la Daffy and Porky. Using Daffy vs Speedy is like Bugs vs Tweety or Speedy..that temaing was far more insulting than any then tolerable stereotyping..I mean, those Hispanic chaarcters (and Jose Jiminez, too) are FUNNY!

    1. Agreed Guys, Funny is funny. Glad I grew up when I did, when I could watch ALL these cartoons( H-B, and Warner Bros.) in the afternoons and on Saturday mornings....uncut. That print reminds me of how some of our 8mm or Super-8 home movies looked after they had been in the closet for decades.

  5. My God, Mike, you're right! I never thought about that, but it makes perfect sense! After all, the Huckleberry Hound DVDs were released not many years after Cartoon Network banned Speedy Gonzales. So, Yowp is right. Quick Draw will never be released on DVD. At least not inthe foreseeable future, as PC is a bigger concern now than ever before, what with the rise of the Social Justice Warriors.

It's a crying shame. I'm Hispanic, and I've always loved both Speedy Gonzales and Baby Looey. As you say, they are the smart ones. People have got to stop being so offended by stereotypes and look at the overall message of the story. But no, nowadays Speedy and Baba Looey are seen as "cultural appropriation!" Thanks, Social Justice Warriors, for destroying creativity and culture. Sigh.

  6. Quick Draw Pagliacci McGraw, equal as seen in the episode El Kabong Strikes Again, which's from the 1st season (1959-60) from The Quick Draw McGraw Show (Hanna-Barbera/Columbia Pictures, 1959-62).

  7. But, fellas… The Quick Draw McGraw Show WAS released on official Warner Home Video DVDs (2 shows each) on the “Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960s” collections – volumes One and Two – Baba and all! But these DID only have Hoyt Curtin music – save for one Snooper and Blabber that got on by a presumed mistake. So, I doubt Baba is to blame. Just those damned stupid greed-based music issues.

HERE’S something I wrote about those sets.

    1. And for this we can be grateful, if not entirely satisfied. After all, we got TWO "El-Kabong" Quick Draws, one per set, and we got to see Snuffles as well as Mr. and Mrs. J. Evil Scientist in one of their rare animated appearances. So I second Joe's "bravo" to the "Saturday Morning 1960s" collections. I believe we also got two complete Magilla Gorilla shows with the original openings and closings that were amazingly left off of the official release of the series. (Though the theme song plays as the disc is booting up. Go figure.)

That said, I am still a huge fan of seeing these shows (I'm back on Quick Draw McGraw again) in their original form complete with interstitials and the animated Kellogg's commercials. I reiterate my above lament, "if only...."

    2. Good point, Joe. You're right, then... Quick Draw couldn't have not been released because of Baba Looey. Plus, CN made a promo featuring Quick Draw and Baba around the same time they dropped Speedy Gonzales cartoons, which can be seen here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V8Z5IRlNQ7I.

On the other hand, Baba was conspicuously absent from all those H-B team-up shows and specials from the 70s and 80s...

But he *was* in a recent issue of Scooby-Doo Team-Up, which you reviewed on your blog: http://tiahblog.blogspot.com/2017/07/on-sale-february-2017-scooby-doo-team.html

Looks like misplaced concerns about depictions of ethnic characters wax and wane over time.

I guess I got a little carried away with my comment, what with recent news and all...

    3. Thank you, Scarecrow and Pelayo!

Yep, the primary reason for not having these wonderful (and, frankly, now “historic”) cartoons in our DVD collection is greed on the part of Warner AND the music rights holders. Just as it once was with the 1966 BATMAN TV Series, between Warner and Fox. At least THAT ONE was, thankfully, settled.

If this were not the case, we would at least have ALL of the Huckleberry Hound series, beyond that first volume, wouldn’t we?

And additional thanks to Pelayo for mentioning my SCOOBY-DOO TEAM-UP Blog review of the issue with Quick Draw McGraw. HERE is a direct link, for anyone wishing to read about one of the best comic books of the year!

    4. But honestly, Joe and company, how many of the largely one note ,largely badly done, Speedy cartoons, can one take..especially with DAFFY (Yowp's justifiably called this "a fake Daffy") or cartoons like "Mexican Cat Dance",1963, a remake of "Bully for Bugs" with Sylvester just an unwilling victim a la Daffy....I love Speedy, just up till 1962 or so...

    5. Pokey, I know the Daffy and Speedy cartoons get a bum rap from many fans, including you. But, personally, I've always liked them. Admittedly, part of my enjoyment from these cartoons may derive from the fact that I was a Hispanic kid growing up in the U.S., and so it was (to me) pretty cool to see Speedy get the better of the gringo Señor Duck.

In any case, the characters still have a lot of personality in these shorts, and the clash of personalities between Daffy and Speedy works, as odd as the antagonistic pairing of a duck with a mouse may seem. Besides, Daffy's personality is not all that different from Sylvester's, don't you think?

To be sure, I was a bit puzzled by the pairing as a kid, but it never bothered me enough to prevent me from thoroughly enjoying the cartoons. In fact, I think one of the cartoons actually poked fun at the pairing, with Daffy wondering aloud why he, a duck, wanted to catch a mouse so badly. I forget which cartoon it was.

    6. The last one made sense as it had Daffy talking to a psycharist, and it turned out catnip was the reason! "QA Tste of Catnip", after Herb Alpert's 1965 song "A Taste of Honey"..agreed with a few points..also liked 1966's ":Snow Excuse".,as it ends happily for both..that was the first SG i saw on TV in years.

    7. I hate "me too" posts, but I agree with Joe. The cartoons were restored and ready for DVD release. According to people involved with the project at the time, things were shelved due to the change in music rights ownership. Apparently even the difficulty of finding programme elements (bumpers mainly) was overcome.
