Blecchhh. I have the first-season DVD so that's what I've concentrated on. Plus, to be honest, I don't know a whole pile of the second-season music cues.

I don't want to dump on Charlie too much. I want to do a post on him to go into this, but I don't envy his position. He was in a new, uncharted business with new, uncharted characters. It seems to me the even tempo and limited gags were a direct result of saving money. But he tried different things and it makes the characters, to me, a little more interesting. Nothing is more boring than a formula.

He - and anyone else, really - will pale in comparison with Maltese and Foster. They're the best. And they had the luxury of coming in after a year's shakedown and could look at what could be improved. What they seem to have done was loaded up on dialogue. It not only quickened the cartoons by substituting for action, but the two of them found the right kinds of dialogue that suited the characters (and the times, as even theatricals had mellowed a lot compared to the late '40s). The downside is after their arrival, the cartoons started descending into a formula.

Charlie seems to have been respected, at least in later years, by Joe and Bill. But it was obvious Hanna and Barbera were overjoyed in hiring Foster and Maltese and showcased them in interviews. That's more than Charlie Shows, who spent time at Disney, got then. And trading off on a Disney connection wouldn't have been bad publicity.

"A Good Good Fairy" probably has the most bizarre ending of an HB cartoon. I get the feeling the overworked Foster couldn't figure out what to do so he said "What the hell? Let's try this!"Yowphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09264605351878574044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-69523096122124883652009-10-11T05:22:00.503-07:002009-10-11T05:22:00.503-07:00Boy, it's *clearly* obvious why and how Charli...Boy, it's *clearly* obvious why and how Charlie Shows was given the ol' heave-ho since I started following your blog...

Though I rather hope you'll plan to review a Foster-driven cartoon of P&D soon - particularly "A Good Good Fairy", which IMO had a somewhat stronger ending than what "Gnarly Charlie" was churning out here :PChris Signorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12308489347614565068noreply@blogger.com
