It was either film, stage or radio. Stage people looked down on film people. Film people looked down on B pictures and shorts (and cartoons gave no billing). Radio actors went for a buck wherever they could get it. Plus radio actors probably had the best skill set required for cartoon voice work.

Both Jean and Janet Waldo like to point out their theatre work being of benefit to their careers but both were basically radio people who went into cartoons.

Rob, the Catholic Digest says she was on for three seasons. She was in a bunch of them starting in 1950 and carrying on through early 1955. Click on this one from April 16, 1950. She's at the 8:39 mark and again at the 24:50 mark doing a dialogue scene with Roy Glenn. If you listen closely, you can tell it's her. There's no disguising the scream, though; Wilma did it in 'The Swimming Pool.'

And here is the one from the week before. Jean starts at 22:05. The announcer isn't credited but it's unmistakably Art Gilmore.

Jean did an 'Amos and Andy' with Mel Blanc but the sound quality is very poor.Yowphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09264605351878574044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-75599611989324018322010-09-02T02:55:49.971-07:002010-09-02T02:55:49.971-07:00Seems like a lot of the greatest voice actors ever...Seems like a lot of the greatest voice actors ever to work in animation, like Mel Blanc and Jean Vander Pyl, originally had their start in radio. I own the " Beaver " episodes she appeared in...her voice and style were as different as night and day. Whether she was playing spoiled "Penny Woods" long suffering, laid back mom, to the stuck up society matron mom of "Alma Hanson" telling the Cleavers that her precious daughter is spending too much time with Wally, she was very much the cameleon...sounded nothing like " Wilma Flintstone "...If I didn't know what she looks like, I would have never guessed it was her. My earliest memories of Jean were a local television station on Sunday mornings running " The Millionaire ". My dad pointed out that the actress was " Wilma Flintstone ". Now, I make it a point do the same thing with my youngest son. To let him know that these voices we hear on an iconic cartoon show were more than just that. Most of these " voice actors ' were multi faceted...behind the mic, and in front of the camera. That episode of " The Millionaire " was the first time I placed the face with the voice. On his radio show, Stan Freberg played a " Father knows Best " episode with Jean as Magaret and she was quite good. She stuck with the part of " Wilma " all the way to the very end. I couldn't have imagined anyone else in that role. As the 50th anniversary of that " Modern Stone-age Family " rolls around.... She is certainly missed.Errolnoreply@blogger.com
