A "Dennis the Menace" episode had this story as well.) Most of that episode's animation looks a lot like George Nicholas.

Besides the impression of Sinatra, Dick Bickenback is also credited with imitating Bing Crosby as well!:)\

SteveC.Pokeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15936757752447320636noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-58311550286493435292009-10-30T18:36:58.455-07:002009-10-30T18:36:58.455-07:00Both Bill and George came from Disney, so I'm ...Both Bill and George came from Disney, so I'm surprised they're so different. Seems George and Bill Keil were often paired on The Flintstones. Two very different styles.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02205523213102710877noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-53333840700879658982009-10-29T13:08:59.089-07:002009-10-29T13:08:59.089-07:00I drove Bill and Joe crazy asking them about their...I drove Bill and Joe crazy asking them about their early days at H-B. They told me that RUFF AND REDDY was developed while they were still at MGM. Since they knew that their animation department was being shut down, they built their "parachute" on MGM's dime, including (I assume) those R&R model sheets.Scott Shaw!http://www.shawcartoons.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-27728378676514755542009-10-29T10:13:00.904-07:002009-10-29T10:13:00.904-07:00George Nicholas did some very funny animation for ...George Nicholas did some very funny animation for H-B over the years, including the hot-tempered southern bear character(voiced by Mel Blanc) who appeared in a couple of Loopy de Loop shorts.MARK CHRISTIANSENhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07313957747157833979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-42122873530140151802009-10-29T02:06:33.440-07:002009-10-29T02:06:33.440-07:00Zartok, that must have been difficult to do, consi...Zartok, that must have been difficult to do, considering most of the animators seem to have drawn the head so it could be animated on another cell.

I really have a horrible time trying to figure out who drew what so I don't know what Nick did differently in pre-Flintstone cartoons from other artists, say like Don Patterson or Art Davis, to name two guys who should have completely different styles.Yowphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09264605351878574044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-52760008905457004912009-10-28T18:47:31.900-07:002009-10-28T18:47:31.900-07:00George Nicholas is cool! The head outline naturally connects with the torso perfectly.Zartok-35https://www.blogger.com/profile/00449976580118722879noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-13087134578471760402009-10-27T07:47:52.667-07:002009-10-27T07:47:52.667-07:00John, thanks for the extra facts. I was never clear on how Ed and Bick divided the work at HB, and wondered who came up with all those football-shaped head designs like Ruff's got.

Trying to find information on these guys while living on the other side of the 49th is like doing a jigsaw puzzle without having all the pieces. All I can do is put together random info and hope there's a bit of a picture.

Bick was in some kind of musical club .. connected with the Glendale Symphony I gather .. so I suspect his singing ability would have been known by the people he worked with, and that's why he was called on for a couple of cartoons.Yowphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09264605351878574044noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5403931334822730200.post-80048362731870926762009-10-26T22:44:38.530-07:002009-10-26T22:44:38.530-07:00This is all really fun information.
I never knew ...This is all really fun information.

I never knew that Bick was the Sinatra sound-alike in Swooner Crooner! Amazing. What an all-round talent.

Ed Benedict told me that he (Ed) designed Reddy and that Bick designed the cat. "He always designed the cutesey Tom and Jerry-ish characters" he would say.

Ed would usually draw one or 2 poses of the characters, then Bick would make the more fully fleshed out model sheets and draw extra poses and angles of the characters like the sheets you have in this post.

An exception would be The Flintstones, where Ed drew a lot of poses and redesigned the show a couple times before Joe B accepted them.

I'm also a big fan of George Nicholas so this post is appreciated!JohnKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14033480276168015590noreply@blogger.com
